Marion County

Powerlifting registration is open intil August 11th 2017; competitions occur in August-November, but it is recommended that you attend practices year round.

Special Olympics athletes compete in the squat, bench press, or deadlift, or a combination of the three (all three, or deadlift + bench), with rules similar to the International Powerlifting Federation raw divisions. Even athletes with some physical disabilities can compete, per the International Paralympic Committee.

However, we do not train our powerlifting athletes in just powerlifting, but we introduce them to overall strength and conditioning principles so that they may excel at other sports. We do other forms of training than just strictly lifting weights- we incorporate endurance training, flexbility training, bodyweight/gymnastics exercises, and even sometimes a fun game of dodgeball. Even if you are not interested in competing in powerlifting as your primary sport, the workouts will help you become physically fit and prevent injury doing other sports. Powerlifting is actually one of the safest sports as well, having less injuries than even track and field or contact sports.

Powerlifting practices are always held every Friday (additional days/times may be added in the summers) at 4:00pm – 5:00pm at CrossFit Iron Legion. It is located at 217 SE 1st Avenue, Suite 100, 34471 in Ocala. We have numerous coaches at the time that are all well-qualified to coach powerlifting, as well as having their backgrounds in coaching sports in general, and not just CrossFit, powerlifting or weightlifting. Our coaches emphasize safety as well as general fitness specifically tailored for each athlete’s fitness level. Marion County does year round training, as we wish for our athletes to maintain consistency, as most powerlifters, or even people that do powerlifting to prepare for another sport, train year round.
