Celebrating Disability Pride Month
Disability
Pride Month is celebrated every July to honor the history,
achievements, experiences, and challenges of the disability community. The observance commemorates the passage of the Americans with
Disabilities Act – the landmark legislation that prohibits
discrimination against people with disabilities in employment,
transportation, and access to services. The ADA was signed into law by
then-President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990.
Disability Pride Month
honors people’s uniqueness by increasing visibility and awareness of
the positive pride people with disabilities feel. This celebration
champions every type of disability. People with disabilities deserve to
live full lives, just like everyone else – yet discrimination persists
for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability.
Disability Pride
Month helps encourage public conversations about all types of
disabilities and their related challenges. We look forward to
highlighting stories of some of our remarkable athletes on our website,
and on social media.
