Black History Month: “He has always encouraged me to do my best”

As part of Black History Month, Special Olympics Florida athletes were asked to recognize someone in their lives who served as a mentor or personal champion. Someone who lived in a way that inspired them. Today, Columbia County athlete Travis Ford honors his father, Special Olympics Florida Coach Kelvin Ford.

My father, Kelvin Ford, has supported me in my sports in Special Olympics Florida. He has been my coach for powerlifting, golf, basketball, and track and field. He has always encouraged me to do my best.

My father has taught me to be patient and confident when competing. He supported me to become an Athlete Leader by helping me prepare for my classes and meetings.

I respect my father because he has patience with me and pushes me to get better. He has helped me get stronger in powerlifting and do my best in other sports. I am proud of the medals that I have won and will continue to compete with the love and support of my father and my family.
