Black History Month: Honoring Our Mentors
In
celebration of Black History Month, Special Olympics Florida athletes
are recognizing the people in their lives who support them, push them,
and set an example for them to follow. Athlete Ashley Harrell of Leon
County chose to honor longtime Special Olympics Florida volunteer Anika
Fields.
I met Ms. Anika when I joined Athlete Leadership, and she’s made a tremendous impact on me. She’s part of the Special Olympics family that’s always there for me. She is now one of my heroes. She’s always willing to help me in any way possible, and I know I can count on her.
Ms. Anika is someone I admire and respect because she’s taught me to stand up for myself. She makes me feel like I can do anything I put my mind to. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve learned from her – that I can do whatever I want if I work at it.
I want the world to know that Ms. Anika is one of the most amazing, kindhearted people I know. She’s always willing to help anyone as much as she can. When I’ve worked with her – whether for speech or an Athlete Leadership class – she makes you believe you can do anything, and that you are no different than anyone else.
