Honoring Black Role Models: “She never lets me settle”

In recognition of Black History Month, we asked athletes around the state to identify a coach, mentor, family member, or community leader who they admire – someone who they view as a champion. Broward County athlete Peter Reece chose to honor his mother, Jo-Ann Reece.

From the time I was little, my mother has been my biggest supporter, going above and beyond to help me succeed. Whether it was learning a new sport or training me in one she grew up playing, she was always there—coaching, pushing, and believing in me every step of the way.

She constantly pushes me outside my comfort zone. She never lets me settle, always encouraging me to reach for something greater. She reminds me that success is about more than just ability—it’s about dedication, growth, and perseverance. She kept my head high, even when things got tough.

When I was young, I saw my mom as the strongest woman in the world. Her fierce attitude was something I admired and wanted to embody. Now that I’m older, I see her strength in an even deeper way. She not only taught me how to be confident in my abilities but also how to stay grounded and focused on my goals.

If you meet my mom, one thing’s for sure—she’s got a loud voice and a bigger heart! She’s not one to back down, and she’ll always stand up for what she believes in. She’s full of passion, determination, and love, and anyone who knows her can tell you that she gives her all to the people she cares about.
