We Build: Creating Job Opportunities for Our Athletes

The leaders of Special Olympics Florida joined executives from two other Central Florida nonprofit organizations recently to celebrate Orlando Health’s “We Build” apprenticeship and employment program.

President and CEO Sherry Wheelock and Chief Operating Officer Meghan McLean attended a partnership brunch at Orlando Regional Medical Center to talk about the impact of the We Build program and how it supports the mission of Special Olympics Florida.

We Build trains people with intellectual disabilities for jobs at Orlando Health with an eye toward hiring them when their training is done. In addition to Special Olympics Florida, the Center for Independent Living and the Down Syndrome Foundation of Florida participate in the program.

Seven athletes from Special Olympics Florida have been part of We Build, so far. Three of those – David Wolf (Seminole County), Donnie Singleton and Jacob Craft (Orange County) – also attended the celebration, sharing their experience with local media.
